What’s the Australian Visa Grant Number?

Once your Australian Visa is approved, the Australian Department of Home Affairs sends you a letter or an email notifying you that your visa has been approved. This letter is called Visa Grant Notification Letter and includes a specific reference number called Australian Visa Grant Number. What is this number and why do you need it?

There are many reasons why the Australian Government provides each successful visa applicant with a specific Visa Grant Number. The main reason is that the reference number allows visa holders to check their visa entitlements and conditions. In fact, all Australian visas have conditions limiting the activities that a person can perform on a visa, and, if these conditions are breached, a person could have his visa cancelled and could be deported. As a result, it is extremely important to know exactly what your visa allows you to.

Depending on how long ago you were granted your Australian visa, you could have had a visa label attached to your passport. However, with Australia’s new electronic visa system, visa holders don’t need a visa label anymore as the visa grant number automatically links their passport to the visa.

How can you check your visa rights and conditions?

The Department of Home Affairs has developed an online system to allow visa holders to check their visa entitlements and conditions online anytime, and to send proof of their visa conditions to others (for example, employers, landlords or the government of a country you would like to visit).

This system is called Visa Entitlement Verification Online system (VEVO) and requires you to input a visa grant number or an application reference number in order to perform the search. Here is the link to vevo

Apart from visa holders, VEVO can also be accessed by employers and education providers to check the visa conditions of their employees and students. If no details show up on VEVO, it could be because the visa has already expired or because the visa holder migrated to Australia before 1990 and has not travelled out of Australia since then.

What happens if you don't’ know or can’t find your visa grant number?

It could be possible that you've lost you visa grant letter and cannot find you visa grant number. If this is the case, don't worry, you can find it in yout ImmiAccount or in correspondence sent to you from the Department. If you still can’t find it, simply use the VEVO Request for Reference Number Form and they will let you know your visa grant number within 14 working days.
